Tosca snob

Live from the Met - Tosca is on right now. My sister and I have been listening to it on our respective radios this morning, critiquing it over the phone. We are complete snobs when it comes to this opera. Complete and utter. Laura says we're Niles and Fraiser.

And this particular version has sucked. Big time. How hard is it to get it right?

Rhythm... anybody in this production heard the word before? I've never heard such liberties taken with the rhythm before. The singers... weak. They aren't doing anything right. And worse - they're compensating for their deficiencies with overacting. Lame. Except for Spoletta. He's great. He's the only one who's done absolutely everything right. I looked up the singer online: Bernard Fitch. Scarpia did ok, laughing when he was supposed to, raising his voice when he was supposed to for the most part. But when he died.... sounded like he was choking on a giant mushy hairball in between cries for help. Laura and I were laughing our asses off, but at the same time.... Tosca always tells him at that moment that he's choking on his own blood.... so I guess that's what he was trying to do. First time we've heard someone try it in a performance, so credit goes to originality. Course, then we were sitting trying to figure out how you practice that particular sound, and what happens when you don't get it right on stage?

Third act is starting. We'll see how they wrap up the ending.

[edit] - ok, the ending SUCKED. Soprano squawked and went flat. Sigh.
